Phase 1: Tracing your Croatian Heritage

Every citizenship journey begins with a family story. Our genealogical research helps uncover the Croatian records that connect you to your ancestry and provide the documentary foundation for your citizenship application.

Croatian Heritage

Who is Phase 1 for?

Every family story starts somewhere different. You may know exactly where your Croatian ancestor was born, have only a handful of family details, or simply want to explore a connection that has been passed down through generations. Wherever you’re starting from, our genealogical research can help establish the documentary link between your family and Croatia. Maybe you are in one of the following situations…

I need records for my application

You know you have Croatian ancestry and your priority is obtaining the records required for your citizenship application. We focus our research on locating and obtaining the official Croatian documents needed to establish your ancestral connection.

I want to understand my family story

Citizenship is important, but so is understanding the family story behind it. We trace your ancestor through Croatian records, helping you establish the documentary evidence you need while reconnecting with the people and places behind your heritage.

I want to reconnect with my Croatian roots

Perhaps Croatia has always been part of your family’s identity, but the details have become blurred over generations. We help turn family memories, names and fragments of information into a clearer, documented connection with your Croatian roots.

I’ve recently discovered Croatian ancestry

You may have recently discovered a Croatian connection you knew little — or nothing — about. Our genealogists can investigate the information you have, following the archival trail in Croatia to uncover where your family story leads.

I’ve already started my own research

You’ve already started researching your Croatian ancestry but have reached a dead end or need official evidence to move forward. We review what you’ve uncovered, identify gaps and take the research into Croatian registries and archives to locate the records you need.

My family history is complicated

We know that family histories don’t always follow a straightforward path, and records can be incomplete or difficult to locate. Our team systematically investigates the available evidence and Croatian sources to help you piece together the documentary trail.

What we do in Phase 1

In Phase 1 we take your family history and turn it into documented evidence. Starting with the information and records you may already have, our genealogists follow the trail through Croatian registries and archives to locate the official records that establish your ancestral connection and lay the foundation for your citizenship application.

Questions about genealogical research

  • What information do I need to start Croatian ancestry research?

Many people begin their citizenship journey with only limited information about their Croatian ancestor.

A good first step is to gather as much information as possible from family members who may know more about your family history. Relatives may have old documents, letters, photographs, certificates, or other records that contain useful clues about your ancestor.

Even small details can be valuable, such as your ancestor’s name, approximate year of birth, place of origin, names of relatives, or information about when and where they emigrated.

With this basic information, it may still be possible to locate your ancestor’s records in Croatia. Historical and civil records can then help fill in missing details and establish a clearer picture of your family’s Croatian origins.

  • Can Salona Consulting begin genealogical research if I only know a few details about my family?

Yes. A few family details can be enough to start exploring the connection. Salona Consulting can review what is already known, identify useful starting points for the research, and determine what additional information may help build a clearer picture of the family line.

Start with whatever is known about the Croatian side of the family. Names, approximate dates, places connected to the family, migration details, and any documents already available can all provide useful clues.

A complete family history is not needed at the beginning. The first review can help establish what is already known and where the next steps should focus.

  • Can I still apply for Croatian citizenship if I cannot find my ancestor’s birth certificate?

Possibly. If you do not have your Croatian ancestor’s birth certificate, the first step is usually to determine whether the record can still be located and issued in Croatia.

Even limited information, such as your ancestor’s full name, approximate date or year of birth, place of origin, names of parents or relatives, or immigration records, can help identify the correct civil registry office, archive, church, or other institution where the record may be held.

In some cases, additional historical research may be necessary to locate the original registration or confirm the ancestor’s place of birth. Once the record is identified, the appropriate Croatian certificate can generally be requested for use in the citizenship application.

  • How far back can Salona Consulting’s Croatian genealogical research go?

There is no fixed generational limit on how far back Croatian ancestry can be researched.

In many cases, family lines can be traced back several generations, and sometimes into the 18th century or earlier. How far the research can go depends on the availability and condition of historical records, including civil registers, church records, archives, and other sources.

The age of the records, the location your family came from, and whether documents have survived over time can all affect how far your ancestry can be traced.

  • Can I use Salona Consulting’s genealogical research service even if I am not ready to apply for Croatian citizenship?

Yes. Genealogical research can be a valuable first step even when citizenship is not an immediate goal. It can help uncover the family line, locate Croatian records, and provide a clearer understanding of the connection to Croatia.

If citizenship becomes something to explore later, the research and records already gathered can provide a strong foundation for assessing the appropriate application pathway.

  • Can I apply for Croatian citizenship if my family name was changed, translated, or adapted over time?

Yes. It is common for Croatian family names to have changed after an ancestor emigrated to another country.

A last name may have been shortened, translated, adapted to the local language, or simply spelled differently in official records over time. In some cases, different versions of the same family name may appear across birth, marriage, immigration, naturalization, and other historical records.

A change in your family name does not necessarily prevent you from applying for Croatian citizenship by descent. What matters is having sufficient documentation to show that the different names or spellings refer to the same person or family and to clearly establish the connection between each generation and your Croatian ancestor.

  • What if my Croatian ancestor’s town or village has a different name today?

This is quite common in Croatian genealogical research. Over time, towns and villages may have changed names, been incorporated into larger municipalities, or appeared under different names in historical records.

Even if the place name used in your family documents no longer appears on a modern map, the historical location can often still be identified. Once the correct present-day location and jurisdiction are established, it becomes easier to determine which civil registry office, archive, church, or other authority may hold your ancestor’s records.

Understanding both the historical and current name of the place is therefore an important step in locating the documents needed to establish your family’s connection to Croatia.

  • What can genealogical research reveal beyond citizenship eligibility?

Genealogical research can uncover much more than a path to citizenship. It can reveal where your family lived, the communities they were part of, important moments in their lives, and pieces of your family story that may have faded over time.

For many people, the research becomes a way to reconnect with their Croatian roots and better understand the people and places that shaped their family history.
