Croatian Citizenship for Spouses

If you are a Croatian citizen, there may be a pathway for your spouse to Croatian citizenship. The appropriate route can depend on how you obtained your citizenship, where you live and whether your marriage is already reflected in the Croatian records. We start by understanding those circumstances, then establish the appropriate next step for you.

How does the process work for spouses?

01

Croatian citizenship established

We first confirm your Croatian citizenship and establish the basis on which it was obtained.

02

Croatian vital records completed

Where required, your relevant vital records must be properly registered in Croatia before we can move forward with your spouse’s citizenship pathway.

03

Your pathway confirmed

Once your citizenship and Croatian records are in order, we review your spouse’s circumstances to establish the appropriate citizenship pathway for them.

04

Your spouse’s application prepared

Where a formal citizenship application is the appropriate next step, Salona can guide you through the preparation process, bringing together the required documents, translations, forms and supporting materials to prepare your spouse’s application for submission.

Registering your marriage in Croatia

As a Croatian citizen, it is recommended to register your marriage in Croatia to support your spouse’s current or future citizenship application.

Not every spouse follows the same citizenship pathway.

Your options can depend on your partner’s circumstances and the basis of your Croatian citizenship. We review your family situation first and identify the appropriate next step before beginning the application process.

A different citizenship process may be required

If you were not yet a Croatian citizen when your child was born, registering their birth may not be sufficient to establish citizenship. Depending on their circumstances, a separate citizenship application may be required. We can establish the appropriate pathway and, where an application is required, guide your family through the citizenship application process.

Young adults may have a separate pathway to register Croatian citizenship where a parent was already a Croatian citizen at the time of their birth. This pathway may be relevant if:

Questions about family citizenship

  • Can my spouse, children, and I apply for Croatian citizenship at the same time?

Usually yes. Families can often move through the Croatian citizenship process together. Minor children may be included in a parent’s application along with some supporting documents for their case, while adult children submit separate applications based on their individual connection to the Croatian family line.

Spouses may also be able to apply at the same time, although this can depend on the embassy or consulate through which you need to apply for citizenship. Some authorities may accept both applications together, while others may require the eligible descendant’s application to move forward first. Since procedures can vary by location, it is helpful to confirm the local approach before planning a joint submission.

  • Does each family member need a separate set of documents for a Croatian citizenship application?

Yes. Each adult family member must submit their own application, even when they are applying through the same Croatian ancestor. This means each person will need their own personal documents and any supporting records required for their individual case.

Exact document and certification requirements can also vary by the Croatian embassy or consulate handling the applications, so we advise applicants to confirm what the specific requirements are before ordering multiple apostilled or legalized copies.

  • How does the Croatian citizenship process work for adopted children?

Adopted children may have a pathway to Croatian citizenship, although the process can depend on how the adoption is legally recognized and which citizenship route applies.

The application may require records confirming both the adoption and the legal parental relationship. Depending on where the adoption took place, those documents may also need additional preparation before they can be used in Croatia.

Reviewing the circumstances first helps establish how the child is connected to the Croatian parent and which documents can best support that connection.

  • Can same-sex spouses apply for Croatian citizenship?

Yes. Same-sex spouses can follow the same citizenship route as other married couples. When preparing the application, the marriage records form part of the documentation used to establish the legal relationship between the spouses. The marriage needs to be legally recognized and properly documented as part of the Croatian citizenship application.

  • If a relative already has Croatian citizenship does it help my application?

Quite possibly. A successful Croatian citizenship application within the family can provide a useful reference when another relative is applying through the same Croatian ancestor. It may help confirm the family line, identify records that were previously used, and provide a clearer starting point for preparing the next application.

Each applicant is still assessed individually. An adult relative does not automatically acquire citizenship because a parent, sibling, cousin, or other family member was approved. Their own connection to the Croatian ancestor must still be documented and the requirements that apply to their application must be met.

For families with a previous successful case, reviewing that file can often help identify which records may be useful again and which additional documents the new applicant will need.

  • Do my Croatian vital records need to be registered before my spouse or children can apply for citizenship?

In many cases, yes. If you already are a Croatian citizen, ensuring your Croatian vital records are complete and up to date is an important first step when applying for Croatian citizenship for your spouse or minor children.

Depending on your family’s circumstances, this may involve registering your marriage or any changes to your name or personal details in Croatia. These records help establish the family relationships required for citizenship applications and ensure that your information is consistent across Croatian official records.

The exact requirements depend on the type of application and your family’s circumstances. We can review your existing records, identify any registrations or updates needed, and help coordinate these steps in Croatia before proceeding with your family’s citizenship applications.

  • Can birth registration confirm my child’s Croatian citizenship, or is a separate application needed?

It depends on your child’s circumstances and how they qualify for Croatian citizenship.

If your child is eligible for Croatian citizenship through a Croatian parent, registering their birth with the Croatian authorities may be part of the process of formally recognizing and recording their citizenship. In some cases, additional documentation or a separate citizenship procedure may be required, particularly depending on the child’s age, place of birth and the citizenship status of their parents.

Birth registration and citizenship recognition for minor children are closely connected, but they are not always the same procedure.

Salona can review your family’s circumstances, establish which registrations or applications are necessary, and help coordinate the process in Croatia to ensure your child’s records and citizenship status are properly documented.

  • Can my current or future spouse apply for Croatian citizenship if I have been divorced?

Yes. Having been divorced does not prevent your current or future spouse from applying for Croatian citizenship through marriage.

What matters is that your previous marriage has been legally dissolved, your current marriage is legally recognized, and your spouse meets the eligibility requirements under Croatian citizenship law.

If your divorce or subsequent marriage took place abroad, these events may also need to be registered in Croatia before proceeding with a citizenship application. Additional documentation may be required to establish your current marital status.

We can review your family’s circumstances, identify any necessary updates to your Croatian civil records, and help you understand the requirements and next steps for your spouse’s citizenship application.
